Music has the power to ignite and inspire you during challenging times, to lift you up when life gets you down, and to make you believe that anything is possible. An intense job search can test the best of us, but music that we love can brighten our days and see even the most dejected jobseeker through to the other side.

So, for your listening pleasure, I’ve put together a special Giraffe CVs job seeking playlist to help you find your groove and get into the swing of job hunting. When your CV is in tune with potential employers, it won’t be long before that magic ‘Yes’ is music to your ears. Drum roll, please:

Track 1: Shake it out, Florence and the Machine

Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
And it’s hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh whoa.

Sometimes the hardest part of a job search is deciding that the time has come to look for something new. It can be easy to think about routes you could have taken or to stay in a job because you know it’s in your comfort zone. It might be that you need to shake off the regrets, ‘what ifs’, or self-doubts that are weighing you down and make the decision to take the next step in your career.

Track 2: Rise, Gabrielle

Now I’m ready to rise again,
Look at my hopes, Look at my dreams,
I’m building bridges from these scenes,
Now I’m ready to rise again.

Having decided that you’re ready to search for a new job, the next step is to take an honest look at what you want to do next. What are your hopes? What are your dreams? Is there a job that would take you closer to where you want to be? Are there new skills you need to learn, or do you already have what it takes to succeed in your dream job?

Track 3: Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix), Omi

Oh, I think that I’ve found myself a cheerleader
She is always right there when I need her.

When you’re looking for a new job, it can feel like you’re on your own, but you don’t have to be. Why not bring together your very own career crack team to support, guide, and motivate you?

People from within your network, a careers advisor, mentor, CV writer, recruitment consultant, or an accountability partner can all make valuable cheerleaders, spurring you on to career triumph. From giving you an honest review of your CV to letting you know about a vacancy within their network, or introducing you to a potential employer, sometimes moving forwards in your career is as much about who you know as what you know. Even just knowing that there’s a friend out there who believes you are destined for greater things is a great confidence booster.

Track 4: Express yourself, Labyrinth

But being myself is something I do well
Whatever you do, do it good
Whatever you do, do, do, do, lord, lord, lord
Do it good, alright

Express yourself, express yourself, whoa do it
See it’s not what you look like, when you doing what you doing
Express yourself, whoa do it.

Your next step is to write an up-to-date CV. Although you can and should have a master CV, it’s important to tweak the content to suit each new opportunity. This might mean organising and prioritising your skills and experience in different ways or using keywords that reflect the language used in the job advertisement. This is the time to express your strengths and show what an asset you would be to your potential employer, simply by being yourself and doing what you do best.

If you’re not confident about expressing yourself on your CV, you could always hand it over to a professional CV writer to add some pizzazz or request a free CV review to see if there are obvious improvements you can make.

Track 5: Bills, LunchMoney Lewis

I got Bills I gotta pay
So I’m gonn’ work, work, work every day
I got mouths I gotta feed
So I’m gonn’ make sure everybody eats
I got Bills

As you get into the swing of your job search, it can be easy to be diverted from your original job wish list. You may find yourself distracted by bright shiny objects in the form of a cool company or a salary package above the market rate. If your job search is taking longer than expected, you may even be tempted to take any role that pays.

Whatever you are looking for in your next role, remember to stay true to your career goals. Check each opportunity against your original target. This way, you will keep your job search on track and ensure the outcome is one you truly want.

Track 6: Tired of waiting for you, The Kinks

Cause I’m so tired
Tired of waiting
Tired of waiting for you.

You’ve sent off your application(s) and now all you can do is wait – wait for an interview, wait for a ‘yes’ or ‘no’, wait to see what direction your life will take next. Whatever happens, remember that the right job is out there waiting for you.

Track 7: Tubthumping, Chumbawamba

I get knocked down
But I get up again
You’re never gonna keep me down

No one likes rejection and not making it to interview can be disheartening. Very few of us can genuinely claim never to have had a setback when looking for the ideal job but it can still be a kick in the stomach. Take a day to commiserate if you need to, but then dust yourself off. Who knows, your dream job could be just around the corner and this could be one of those ‘Sliding Door’ moments that you look back on in years to come and think, “Wow, that was a lucky escape!”

Track 8: Don’t Stop Believin’, Journey

Don’t stop believin’
Hold on to that feelin’

One of the most appealing qualities in an interviewee is confidence. When your CV works its magic and you get invited to that all-important interview for your dream job, take your time to do your research, find out about the employer and think about hiring you will benefit them. Be confident in yourself because, if you believe in yourself, it will be easier for a potential employer to believe in you too.

Track 9: Celebration, Kool & The Gang

There’s a party goin’ on right here
A dedication to last throughout the years
So bring your good times and your laughter too
We gonna celebrate and party with you
Come on now, celebration
Let’s all celebrate and have a good time, yeah yeah
We gonna celebrate and have a good time

You nailed the job interview and you’ve just signed your contract – all your hard work was worth it. So, before you get down to business in your new role, take a moment to celebrate your achievement. You set your sights on making a change and stood out from all the other applicants. That’s incredible.

Bonus tracks

Whatever stage you’re at in the job hunt, you might need some extra inspiration to step away from the job you know inside out and to write the next chapter of your life. We’ve put together some bonus tracks for you to get you motivated and believing that anything is possible once you set your mind to it:

Eye of the Tiger, Survivor

Rising up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive

So many times it happens too fast
You trade your passion for glory
Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

Superheroes, The Script

When you’ve been fighting for it all your life
You’ve been working every day and night
That’s how a superhero learns to fly

She works hard for money, Donna Summer

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

Already knows, she’s seen her bad times
Already knows, these are the good times
She’ll never sell out, she never will
Not for a dollar bill
She works haaaaard

Man in the Mirror, Michael Jackson

I’m Gonna Make A Change,
For Once In My Life
It’s Gonna Feel Real Good,
Gonna Make A Difference
Gonna Make It Right . . .

Girl on Fire, Alicia Keyes

She got both feet on the ground
And she’s burning it down
Oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh
She got her head in the clouds
And she’s not backing down

This girl is on fire
This girl is on fire
